I drove away to find somewhere peaceful to have breakfast etc. What I found is in the image below.
Once all awake and organised, I headed to Tunis. One to have a look around and two to resolve some things. I needed local currency, a phone sim, fuel and food for a few days.
I caught rush hour traffic. You can tell a lot about a place by its traffic. Tunis was organised, quietly respectful and working.
The roads were way better than Italy, there were very few honking horns, except to let you know someone was passing you or was letting you in/out. Police people managed the busy junctions. No dramas, no fuss. I liked that. Roundabouts were a complete free for all it seemed, just for a Tunisian bit of flare! I do like driving in foreign cities for some reason. Ironic as I can't stand British ones.
France occupied Tunisia, and like Morocco, it still follows a lot of their methodology. Most people speak French, after the native Arabic, and quite a few spoke very good English. There are French supermarket chains, but with the Arab twist of spices, dried fruits etc to be bagged and weighed. The Tunisians also have the small family run epicerie, which I've yet to investigate.
My trip through town took me upto the old town walls, then through the car parts area, into the electronics area. A stop for coffee and to ask for a few things proved the Tunisians to be friendly and eager to help, especially as I spoke French.
Once jobs all sorted, I headed north to the coast up there. It's mainly rolling farmland, with lots of rich green crops I couldn't name. Herds of sheep and/or goats roam the road edges, tended by a solitary herder. The bigger flocks have dogs with them.
My route passed through the port town of Bizerte. It's a bit more chaotic and crammed than Tunis was, so once through I was glad to head north to less populated areas.
Cape Engela was a good find. A few people milling around. It is the northern most point of the African Continent, so has two monuments to mark it. I decided to park up and enjoy the quiet and I luckily found a spot with my own little beach. So swim time when the sun sets I think!
